Elon Musk's SpaceX SPCX. O announced on Tuesday that it will purchase Anysphere, the company that created the well-known AI coding tool Cursor, for $60 billion. This move is aimed at increasing its role in the business AI sector.

This news comes soon after Musk's launch of his rockets-to-AI company on the Nasdaq, which achieved a remarkable debut that valued the company at over $2 trillion, making it one of the most valuable businesses globally. SpaceX predicts that the merger will be finalized by the third quarter of 2026. SpaceX has been interested in Cursor for several months. In April, the company revealed that it had an option to buy San Francisco’s Cursor for $60 billion later this year, or to invest $10 billion in a new partnership.

Like OpenAI and Anthropic, Cursor is among several tech startups in Silicon Valley that have attracted many developers by using artificial intelligence for coding automation, a field where AI firms have found initial success. Since its launch in 2022, Cursor has experienced fast growth, generating approximately $2.6 billion in annual business-to-business revenue, with enterprise sales increasing significantly, according to data from the company provided to Reuters earlier this month.

This agreement may strengthen xAI, the Grok chatbot developer that merged with SpaceX in February, in the AI coding arena where it has been falling behind competitors. It will also give Cursor additional computing power to enhance its AI models. In March, two product engineering leaders at Cursor mentioned they joined SpaceX to work on the company's lunar projects and xAI. It is currently unclear whether this deal will impact SpaceX's contracts to lease its data centers. Recently, the company has made agreements with Anthropic and Google, owned by Alphabet GOOGL. O, to rent cloud computing services worth about $26 billion per year combined. Both agreements feature 90-day cancellation clauses, which means SpaceX can quickly regain computing resources if necessary.
