A Sikh man arrested for carrying kirpan in the United States as the customer at a grocery store has called the police. 33-year-old Harpreet Singh Khalsa, was born as Justin Smith, has worn a kirpan, a ceremonial knife, every day since he has been converted to Sikhism nine years ago.
Khalsa, who runs a catering business, said that he has been stopped by police number of times, and was also arrested again in the last week, as a customer has called the police, outside a grocery store in the Catonsville, Maryland.
Khalsa said that he had put an explanation to the officers that the knife is an inner part of his religion, but the officers frisked him, took the kirpan away and placed the man in handcuffs and then they drove him to the local precinct.
Later, Khalsa was released without any charges filed, as the police have "confirmed that the knife was a kirpan and part of his religion, and not a threat to the community," said the Baltimore County Officer Jennifer Peach.
Peach also said that the department is providing the education and also guidance to the officers about Sikhs and also their culture.
Stressing on the significance of the kirpan, Khalsa said, "We don't consider it a knife, but a visual reminder to stand up to justice."
"The kirpan obligates a Sikh to the ideals of generosity, compassion and service to humanity," said Harsimran Kaur, the legal director of New York-based Sikh Coalition.
Khalsa said that when the police have approached him on Monday, he was shopping, and they walked him out of the grocery store, took his kirpan away.
A witness to the incident, Rachel Bereson Lachow, has captured the arrest on a video and posted the video on her Facebook page. The 54-seconds video has received several comments.
