Days after a federal appeals court in the United States decided that most of the tariffs set by the Trump administration were not legal, US President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) criticized the ruling once again, claiming that without these tariffs, the nation would be "totally ruined" and its military strength would be "quickly destroyed." In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump attacked a "Radical Left group of judges" for their 7 to 4 ruling and thanked one Democratic judge, appointed by Obama, who he said had "voted to protect our Country" with bravery and esteem for the nation. "Without Tariffs, and all of the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS we have already collected, our Country would be totally ruined, and our military strength would be quickly destroyed. In a 7 to 4 Opinion, a Radical Left group of judges didn’t care, but one Democrat, chosen by Obama, actually voted to protect our Country. I want to thank him for his bravery! He cares for and honors the U.S.A.," Trump expressed in his message.

The statement from the US President followed a federal appeals court's decision on Friday (local time) that struck down several tariffs from his administration, stating that he exceeded his powers by using emergency authority to impose these import duties, as reported by CNN. According to CNN, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit issued an unsigned opinion that upheld a previous court's ruling, stating that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not allow the type of tariffs that Trump put in place earlier this year. The court highlighted that Trump’s application of this law marked an unprecedented misuse of executive power, pointing out that the authority to impose taxes and tariffs is a key duty assigned by the Constitution to Congress.

Trump had previously criticized the decision, asserting that all tariffs on those countries would continue, calling the recent ruling by a "highly Partisan Appeals Court" wrong. "ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN PLACE! Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court wrongly stated that our Tariffs should be lifted, but they know that the United States of America will prevail in the end. If these Tariffs ever disappeared, it would be a total disaster for the Country. It would make us financially weak, and we must be strong," Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday. The court also mentioned that the tariffs would continue to be enforced for now, delaying the implementation of its ruling until October. This postponement gives the Trump administration a chance to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
