As the US Senate approaches a pivotal vote regarding the White House's extensive tax and immigration plan, tech mogul Elon Musk has intensified his critique of President Donald Trump's prominent spending initiative, dubbed "One Big Beautiful Bill." Musk has warned that he will work to unseat lawmakers supporting this controversial proposal, which could significantly cut social welfare programs and contribute an astounding $3 trillion to the national debt. On Monday, Senate members were entrenched in a lengthy session of voting on amendments as Republicans aimed to advance this ambitious bill, which seeks to extend the tax cuts implemented in 2017 during Trump’s first term. Musk, who served as an advisor to Trump until May, expressed his dismay on X, stating, "Every Congress member who ran on a platform of reducing government expenditure and then proceeded to vote for the largest debt increase in history should be ashamed." He further asserted, "They will face consequences in their primary elections next year, and I will make it my mission to ensure that happens."

Musk also signaled the potential formation of a new political group called the American Party, which would provide a viable alternative to the existing Democrat-Republican framework, should the Senate approve Trump's spending bill. He proclaimed on X, "If this reckless spending legislation is passed, the American Party will be established the following day. Our nation needs a choice beyond the uniparty so that citizens can truly have a VOICE." President Trump intends for the "One Big Beautiful Bill" to prolong his expiring tax cuts totaling $4.5 trillion, augment military expenditures, and facilitate unprecedented mass deportations alongside enhanced border security measures.

However, as senators prepare for the midterm elections in 2026, they appear to be at odds over budget cuts that would strip approximately $1 trillion in subsidized healthcare from the nation’s poorest citizens, while simultaneously exacerbating the staggering budget deficits, projected to exceed $3.3 trillion over the next decade.

Republican leaders aim to have the bill ready for signature during the Independence Day celebrations on Friday. By early evening, progress had slowed considerably, with lawmakers addressing a multitude of amendments in the so-called "vote-a-rama," ultimately managing only 14 votes in the first seven hours. Nevertheless, due to Trump's strong influence within the party, it is likely that he will achieve his goals in the Senate, where Republicans maintain a narrow majority. All Democrats in the chamber are expected to oppose the measure. Passing the bill would be a significant victory for the Republican leader, who has faced criticism for advancing many of his agenda items through executive orders that bypass congressional oversight. Yet, Senate approval is only part of the process, as the extensive 940-page document must also secure a separate vote in the House of Representatives, where several dissenters within the slim Republican majority have indicated they may resist it.

The former head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk, took to X on Saturday to deliver a scathing assessment of the Senate's new tax-and-spending bill. He labeled the nearly 1,000-page legislation as "completely absurd and harmful," just as the Senate was about to begin discussions on the proposal.

"The most recent draft from the Senate threatens to eliminate millions of jobs across the United States and could inflict significant strategic damage on our nation! It is absolutely outrageous and detrimental," Musk expressed in his post. This statement was part of Musk's ongoing criticism of the Republican Party's proposed legislation, which he had earlier condemned as a "disgusting abomination" riddled with unnecessary expenditures. His remarks sparked a social media confrontation between him and Trump, with both individuals trading barbs online. Tensions escalated when Musk made a reference to a supposed link between Donald Trump and the Epstein documents, a post he ultimately chose to remove.
